Diversifying the Workforce. A Challenge or Opportunity?
Duncan is CEO of The Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST), an international charity that is helping businesses transform the modern workforce by addressing the root causes of poor workforce diversity – we are stuck in “social bubbles” and most people only know, and feel comfortable interacting with, people just like themselves.
At the JST, our vision is of an inclusive world where we can all contribute and feel valued. We have a unique mission, to give people of mixed abilities and circumstances the freedom to explore their ability, potential and place in the world through inclusive adventures at sea.
JST delivers its mission using two purpose-built tall ships that are crewed by diverse teams of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, including individuals facing severe economic challenges and those with physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities and mental health issues.
Accredited by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, JST delivers programmes around the world in collaboration with a wide range of charities, educators, corporate and governmental organisations.
In partnerships with leading businesses like Barclays, NortonRoseFulbright and Allianz, JST has helped diversify staff networks and bring employees closer to the communities around them.
Through the power of inclusive adventure, participants build new skills, increase self-awareness and gain attitudes that tackle limitations in their life.
Do you see diversity as a problem or a way to win the war for talent?
Do your company initiatives look at diversity beyond the issues of gender or race?
When did you last interview someone from a very different background or with a disability?
