Underwriter, Zurich Financial Services
Prop-forward England Rugby Union
For our December Luncheon we were very lucky to have Claire Purdy, an underwriter at Zurich Financial Services, who was part of the World Cup winning England Ladies Rugby Team in August, come to tell us what it is like to be a World Cup winner.
Claire left with a new City Forum scarf to go with her gold medal...!
Claire joined Zurich Financial Services from University College Chichester where she studied Sports Studies. Claire has been busy juggling a career in insurance and her love of rugby for a few years. She plays for Wasps and has won Players’ Player of the Year three times. She played for England in the 2010 World Cup and again in 2014 when the team lifted the trophy having beaten Canada in the final.
Versatility is a big part of Claire’s game — she’s the only player to have been capped in every position in the front row for England.
Rugby found Claire late, however. She was 21 years old. Why? Because she was busy representing Surrey at stoolball which, so we’ve been told is like ‘Cricket in the Air’. Dating back to the 15th century, milkmaids would use their milking stools as a ‘wicket’ and try to bat a ball away, rather like a cross between cricket and rounders.
She’s a big fan of animated films — Despicable Me being one of her favourites — and her favourite food is steak but she finds she gets too nervous before a game to eat.
