October Luncheon 2017

The Merchant Taylors' Hall, Threadneedle Street, EC2R 8JB

"The Digital revolution has barely started and is going to be terrifying for insurers.”

Richard Poole is a founding Partner at Fluxx, an innovation company that helps large companies harness the power of Digital technology.

Everyone is talking about Digital Transformation, with programmes in place in many insurers to adapt to new digital channels, leverage new consumer and IoT digital devices, adopt the cloud…but these technologies are just a tracer bullet compared to the fusillade of bigger and more disruptive technologies which are about to land in the heartland of insurance. We’ll discuss what these new technologies are, why and how they are going to radically change the insurance markets and what insurers and new entrants are doing to prepare for that future now.

Richard has been involved in Digital Transformation and financial services since the late 90s, leading one of Europe’s most successful Digital Agencies through the noughties and is the founding partner of Fluxx, a digital transformation company based in London. Over this time Richard and his team have worked on digital projects as diverse as Maclaren F1’s telemetry systems to the design of Tesco and John Lewis online services. In the last 5 years Richard has been deeply involved in the banking and insurance sector working with underwriters and brokers to create new digital services and businesses, as well as being an investor and advisor to a number of insuretech startups. Richard’s talk will draw on his experiences to date to highlight the challenges and opportunities that technology presents to Insurers and also the likely impact of emerging technologies on the sector.

Gala Dinner 2017

Bleeding Heart, Bleeding Heart Yard, Farringdon, London , EC1N 8SJ

Guest Speaker:

A. D. Leakey CMG CBE

Lieutenant General, Black Rod

Black Rod is best known for his part in the ceremonies surrounding the State Opening of Parliament and the

Throne speech. He summons the Commons to attend the speech and leads them to the Lords. As part of the ritual,

as Black Rod approaches the doors to the chamber of the House of Commons to make his summons, they are

slammed in his face. This is to symbolize the Commons' independence of the Sovereign. Black Rod then strikes the

door three times with his staff, and is then admitted and issues the summons of the monarch to attend.

Keith Broughton Pic

February Lunch 2017

The Merchant Taylors' Hall, Threadneedle Street, EC2R 8JB

Keith Broughton will talk to us about his transition from being a Navy Bomb Disposal Diver to a Lloyd’s Underwriter.  Underwriting specialist subsea equipment relies upon a specialist knowledge and Keith will share from his own experiences how he approaches these unique risk factors in an increasingly competitive insurance market place.  This sector is responsible for some of the world’s leading technologies including those utilised for large area searches in deep water environments for lost aircraft, naval warfare and surveillance, and environmental studies, to name a few.

Born in 1966 in Lusaka Zambia, Keith went on to read Marine and Freshwater Biology at Queen Mary College, London.  He subsequently served 10 years in the Royal Navy as a Seaman Officer specialising in diving and mine clearance and, on leaving the Royal Navy in 1995, sailed to Australia on a Swan 51 yacht (not dissimilar to the previous Lloyd’s Yacht Club “Lutine”).

On returning to the United Kingdom he briefly studied Law before taking up the position of Marine Department Manager at KPMG in Cayman Islands.  He returned to the United Kingdom in December 1999 to join Simon Edwards at Leviathan, a specialist Subsea Equipment Underwriting Facility.  This proved to be his perfect job, combining his wide interest in all things underwater, whilst allowing him to maintain all of his contacts throughout the industry.

In July 2016 Beazley, a Managing agent with whom they had enjoyed a long term affiliation, acquired Leviathan and Keith is now underwriting at Lloyd’s under the Beazley Leviathan banner.

Keith is involved with the Society for Underwater Technology as the Deputy Chairman of the London and Southern England Branch.  He chaired the committee that authored The Operation of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Series, Volume 1, Second Edition, and was made a Fellow of the Society in 2013.

David Yorke

New Technology Training and Projects Manager, Tower Transit Operations Ltd

“Alternative Energy Sources & Stored Power Challenges”

David is involved with alternative energy sources, specifically hybrid power and hydrogen systems.  He is a Chartered Engineer and has spent the last 6 or so years developing environmentally friendly low emission power systems for our London buses.  Over the last few years he has been lecturing around the world on this subject, as the UK is exporting this knowledge, most recently in Asia.  David is an expert in this area of technology and with the future demands globally.  The likes of Tesla are using their stored power technology developed from their exotic sports cars in domestic home solutions, and off grid alternative energy solutions are very topical currently.  Whilst David works for a London based bus company his day to day work is about as far removed from driving a red double decker as you can get!

Sean Gay

Court Assistant & Historian with The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights

Sean retired in 2010 after 50 years involvement with shipping which he says, “has been a wonderful industry to work in, full of the most interesting people, all helping to join the world up.”

Sean will take us on a fascinating historical journey around our City of London streets and nearby parts of the River Thames, which we see every day, and may even have some scuttlebutt on the Jamaica Inn.

Sean was born in London, and grew up in Malaysia and UK.  Secondary school education for Sean at The Nautical College in Pangbourne included navigation, seamanship, ship construction and stability, on top of normal school subjects.  Sean joined the Merchant Navy aged 16 and spent 10 years trading world-wide serving on cargo and passenger liners, and cruise ships.  He became a Master Mariner in 1973.

Sean entered the City of London as a shipbroker and then became a founding Director of OTAL, a shipping line from Europe to West Africa utilising roll on roll off ships.  He was Managing Director of OTAL for 15 years before the company was successfully sold to its competitor.  Sean has also held positions of Managing Director of Rickmers Linie (a Hamburg based global heavy lift and general cargo liner service with 150 years history of serving China), Non-Executive Director of US Lines (USL) container service China (USA, New Zealand, Australia triangular trade routes).

Sean retired in 2010 after 50 years involvement with shipping which he says, “has been a wonderful industry to work in, full of the most interesting people, all helping to join the world up.”  From time to time Sean acts as an Expert Witness for commercial shipping legal disputes.  His time these days is spent as a City of London Guide, a City of Westminster Guide, a Tate Modern Volunteer Guide, and as a Court Assistant to The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights Livery Company.
